After the decline of the Western Roman Empire, investiture was performed by members of the ruling nobility despite theoretically being a task of the church. It was known as lay investure. The clash between papacy and secular rulers in Medieval Europe is known as the “Investiture Controversy”. In this video this issue is discussed.
