Today, I will be featuring a super rare gold coin from Romania. This is an 1883 20 lei gold piece from Romania. There were only about 180,00 pieces minted most of which were melted after WWII. The coin feature King Carol I on the front. He is a king of German ancestry. After personally leading the Romanian Army during the Russo-Turkish War, his ties to a prominent German Royal House helped guarantee the recognition of Romania as an independent nation state in 1878 at the Congress of Berlin. After these victories Carol was also offered rule of Spain and Bulgaria, but he declined stating it would create a conflict of interest. I have placed this coin in a 21mm air-tite capsule and I must say I am disappointed with the fit (the coin is 21mm and I purchased the one with the insert hoping it would provide for a more snug fit).
