The North Korean won (/wʌn/;[3] Korean: 원, Korean pronunciation: [wʌn]; symbol: ₩; code: KPW) or Democratic People’s Republic of Korea won (Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국 원) is the official currency of North Korea. It is subdivided into 100 chon. The won is issued by the Central Bank of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, based in the capital city, Pyongyang.
The won became the currency of North Korea on December 6, 1947, replacing the Korean yen that was still in circulation
