உலகெங்கும் உள்ள மக்களின் பண்பாட்டில் காகத்திற்கு ஓர் இடமுண்டு. காகம் கரைந்தால் வீட்டிற்கு விருந்தாளிகள் வருவர் என்பது தமிழர் நம்பிக்கை ஆகும். மேலும் ஒற்றுமைக்கும் பகிர்ந்து உண்ணலுக்கும் காக்கை எடுத்துக்காட்டாகக் காட்டப்படுகிறது.
காகம் அல்லது காக்கா என்று அழைக்கப்படும் பறவையை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்து இருப்போம், அலட்சியமும் செய்து இருப்போம். ஆனால் ஆச்சர்யப்படும் அளவு அசாத்திய குணங்கள் பல தெய்வ ரகசியங்கள் அதற்கு உண்டு என்றும், மனிதனைவிட உயர்ந்த வாழ்வில் நெறிமுறைகளை கடைபிடிக்கும் பறவை என்பதையும் நம்மில் பலர் அறிந்து இருக்க வாய்ப்பு இல்லை.
“என்ன இன்று காக்காய்க் குளியலா?” என்று. ஏன் அப்படிக் கேட்கிறார்கள் என்று யோசித்தால், காக்காய் திடீரென்று குளிக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டு நீர்நிலைகள் அருகிலே வரும். எப்போதுமே காக்காய்க்கு சந்தேகம் அதிகம். அதனால் யாராவது வந்துவிடப் போகிறார்களே, யாராலாவது ஆபத்து ஏற்பட்டுவிடுமோ என்றெல்லாம் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு தலையை ஒரு முக்கு தண்ணீரில் முக்கிவிட்டு, பலமுறை தலையை சிலுப்பிக்கொள்ளும். அதுபோல அரைகுறைக் குளியல் போட்டுவிட்டு வரும் நம்மை அப்படித்தான் கேட்பார்கள்.
அறிஞர்களின் கருத்துப்படி பறவைகளில் அதிக அறிவு த்திறன் பெற்ற பறவை காகம் ஆகும். இவற்றின் அறிவுத்திறனுக்குக் காரணம் அதன் மூளைப்பகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ள ‘நிடோபோடாலியம் ஆகும்.
அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து கரைதல். உணவினை உடனே உண்ணாமல் தன் கூட்டத்தினரை அழைத்து பகிர்ந்து உண்ணல். உணவு உண்ணும்போதே சுற்றும் முற்றும் பார்த்தல். பிறர் காணாமல் ஜோடி சேர்ந்து இணைதல். மாலையிலும் குளித்தல் பிறகு தங்குமிடத்திற்கு செல்லுதல் போன்றவற்றை வழக்கமாக்க் கொண்டவை.
