During World War II copper was in short supply, so to replace the copper Lincoln penny the US Mint conducted experiments with alternate materials such as steel, aluminium, brass, rubber, plastics and glass to name a few.

A number of these experimental coins have been secured by Heritage Auctions and will be sold at the 2017 ANA Worlds Fair of Money in Denver. This includes a remarkable collection of glass pattern strikes.
