Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is locally known as
Gharapuri meaning city of caves.
In 1534, the Portuguese took over the island of Gharapuri from Gujarat
Sultanate. They named it after a huge rock cut elephant statue situated on the island.
There are seven caves on the island, but the postcards that we will see today belong to cave no.1
Rock cut Elephanta Caves were constructed during the 5th and 6th century. These caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva.
At the entrance of cave no.1 is a 7 meter high statue of Sadashiv which is also known as Trimurti. It shows three aspects of Lord Shiva the creator, the preserver and the destroyer.
Cave no.1 also has representations of Lord Shiva such as Natraja, Yogishwara, Andhakasurvadha, Ardhanarishwara, Kalyansundermurti, Gangadharmurti and Ravanaanugrahamurti.
