Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! Today we have a very special United States two dollar bill from 1862. This is the earliest United States $2 bill and it is the reason these notes are called greenbacks. This is the first time the United States released banknotes. These United States notes were signed into being through the First Legal Tender Act by President Abraham Lincoln. They were specifically issued by the U.S. Treasury to pay expenses incurred by the Union during the American Civil War.
