Today we will be taking a look at the 1890 and 1891 series Treasury Notes. These notes are very valuable to collectors. This series of notes contains some of the rarest and most valuable bills ever auctioned. These bills were originally issued by the U.S. government to individuals selling silver bullion to the Treasury. These are different from other bills like silver and gold certificates in that they were only redeemable for “coin.” This meant the U.S. government could provide silver coins, gold coins, or both, to bearers of the notes.

These large-sized notes contain some of the most prominent individuals in U.S. history, and more specifically notable figures in the U.S. civil war. The notes in this series are as follows:

Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s War Secretary, $1

James McPherson, Civil War General, $2

George Thomas, Civil War General, $5

Philip Sheridan, Civil War General, $10

John Marshall, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, $20

William Seward, U.S. Secretary of State and Involved in Purchase of Alaska, $50

David Farragut, Civil War Admiral, $100

William Sherman, Civil War General, $500

George Meade, Civil War General, $1000

The portrait of General George Meade on the $1000 Note was engraved by Charles Burt and it is the most expensive banknote ever sold. Of the seven “Grand Watermelon” notes known to exist today, only three are available to collectors.
